Anthony Gordon transfer decision as difficult Newcastle United calls made Newcastle United are facing the prospect of losing some of their big-name stars in the summer transfer window Comments Lee Ryder Chief Newcastle United Writer , Stuart Jamieson Football Content Editor , Andrew Musgrove Social Media Editor , Sean McCormick Newcastle United reporter and Ross Gregory Head of North East Sport 16:00, 22 Apr 2026 View 5 Images Newcastle United's Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Lewis Hall have been linked with big-money moves It remains a depressing fact that Newcastle United will have to sell players this summer in order to help fund more investment in their first-team squad. Financial rules mean the Magpies cannot simply spend, despite having the financial backing of Saudi Arabia's PIF. This summer feels like something of a crossroads, with several stars said to be considering their futures at the club, with no Champions League football next term. Indeed at this stage, European competition of any sort is looking like a long shot. United have been clear that anyone leaving will do so on the club's terms - and price - but with as rivals know they need to sell, fans can expect plenty of interest in the big names. Already we have seen Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, TIno Livramento and Lewis Hall linked with moves away, with players of their calibre naturally attracting attention. Newcastle will want to keep as many as possible, but some may be seen as more expendable than others. But this squad seems to be outgrowing each other rapidly and there is only one way that the club can sign players this summer, by selling some big-names. With a heavy heart somebody will have to be sold this summer - and that's coming from the CEO David Hopkinson himself. Let's make one thing clear, there are no cut-price deals on offer for budding buyers so any such sales would command the highest possible fees. If I had to pick two from those who seem to be on the market - those names being Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon - it would not be an easy decision. But it's the decision that is facing sporting director Ross Wilson and potentially Howe in the next few weeks. If I was pushed over selling Bruno or Tonali it would be a tough choice. However, thinking of future sell on value, I don't think that Bruno's price, at 28, will rise much more in the next few years. His contract ends in 2028 so anything close to £80m is a no-brainer. That would mean keeping Tonali and offering him both a new deal and the captaincy moving forward. After asking questions on the sale of Gordon I've had nothing back in the last few days that he wants to stay or that the club aren't open to selling him. If anything Newcastle seem happy for it to be known that they would take £74m so if the player and the club are happy, I'd push on with that deal with Bayern Munich. That would allow me to keep Tino Livramento who will surely only go up in value. These are horrible choices but Gordon and Bruno to be sold if you are pushing me. Sean McCormick As soon as David Hopkinson intimated that Newcastle could sell one or two key players this summer, interest in their 'big five' stars was always bound to increase. Lewis Hall and Bruno Guimaraes are the Magpies' only two players nominated for a place in the Premier League's Team of the Season and in a season that has been underpinned by inconsistency, those two players have been consistently excellent. Guimaraes has had his best goalscoring season on Tyneside and has put Newcastle on his back at times this season when they have needed him most. Hall's performance against Barcelona's Lamine Yamal announced his abilities to the world and still just 21, Newcastle need to be putting them both at the heart of their rebuild. That leaves Tino Livramento, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Livramento's exit would mean Newcastle have to sign two right-backs in the summer but his performances recently, coupled with his fractured injury record, would suggest it might be the best time to cash in if Manchester City or Arsenal come calling. I actually think Gordon would be the toughest player to replace. His record across three seasons has been very good and he is comfortably Newcastle's best winger. Finding elite wingers isn't easy but if a bid of £75-80million comes in from Bayern Munich, it may be too good to turn down, particularly given it's not selling to a direct rival. That means Tonali would stay, despite the unhelpful comments of his agent of late. Both Manchester clubs and Arsenal are keen on Tonali, as are Juventus, but there's no way any Italian club will be able to stump up the money Newcastle would demand. If they can keep their formidable midfield three of Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton together, coupled with the fact they have Jacob Ramsey and Lewis Miley in reserve, it is one area of the squad that won't need too much repair other than replacing Joe Willock who is also expected to leave this summer. View 5 Images Newcastle's Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall in action for England (Image: PA) Ross Gregory Let's start with the two that absolutely should not be sold: Lewis Hall and Bruno Guimaraes. The duo have been United's best players this season and all the evidence suggests that they remain happy on Tyneside. Hall - while his form has dipped over the last month - has the potential to become England's best left-back since Ashley Cole and he is a boyhood Newcastle fan; Bruno is the heartbeat of the team, an adopted Geordie whose influence on and off the pitch is immense. That brings us to Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon. Now, regardless of this season and any injuries, Newcastle are a stronger side with these three in it. The caveat being that is only the case when they are fully focused. There is a reason why absolute giants like Man City, Bayern Munich, Man United, Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal are sniffing around this trio, and that's because they are - or have the potential to be - world class players. They would enhance just about any team in Europe. Gordon would be the hardest of all to replace. While his form is up and down at times, his pace, versatility, directness and workrate combine for a unique package. However, if Newcastle can get close to £80m for him, and he leaves for Germany rather than a Premier League rival, it would be a good deal and allow United to rebuild. If a second star has to be sold I'd go for Livramento over Tonali. Yes, that would leave the Magpies looking for two right-backs after Kieran Trippier's exit but with a chequered fitness record and a contract ticking down, cashing in is the best solution which would allow Newcastle to keep Tonali for another season at least. View 5 Images Bruno Guimaraes (Image: Getty Images) Andrew Musgrove This is a very simple answer in my view - Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento. I don't believe that Gordon every really recovered from Liverpool's interest failing to become more than just whispers, he's never looked truly focused. If Bayern Munich are serious about him, then United need to move quickly and ensure they get the best price possible - and it's at least £20m more than the price tag being reported. As for Tino, he's a tremendous footballer but his luck with injuries is becoming a real issue - to the point that any potential summer move could be derailed after picking up another injury, this time against Bournemouth. A fit and firing Livramento is pushing an £80m price tag in my view but any buying clubs will be concerned about his fitness record, and that may prove problematic to selling him. Sandro Tonali is the only other one I'd consider saying goodbye too. He's arguably the finest midfielder I've seen in black-and-white but he's another one who hasn't looked entirely focused this season. A move away would likely be to a fellow Premier League side - and it's a challenge of United's hierarchy to get the best value for him. As long as the money is reinvested wisely, selling any of the three names I've listed above, isn't as bad as it first might seem. View 5 Images Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. (Image: NurPhoto, NurPhoto via Getty Images) Stuart Jamieson Anyone who wants to leave Newcastle United this summer should be shown the door. Quickly. It's not as simple as that, of course, but the club do not need any player who would rather be elsewhere. Let's face it, we're only really talking about those who they can sell for big bucks and these days we know any revenue will be funnelled back into incoming transfers. We're told no one has yet made their future intentions clear, although you could argue that some of their performances on the pitch are doing that for them. Just a few months ago, the thought of selling Tino Livramento would have been extremely unpalatable, but while United would have to find two right-backs to replace him, his exit would at least not disrupt the squad too much. Similarly, Sandro Tonali was so good last season that it's almost inconceivable that Newcastle could allow him to leave. In an ideal world, he would stay, but I fear United will get an offer they cannot refuse. It would serve both the club and player to move Anthony Gordon on while he value is still high. He could have a good World Cup, which may add a few million on, but let's get something done before that.
