The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is reaffirming its role as a regional economic growth organization, the group announced Thursday, Aug. 27 , saying its mission is to strengthen businesses, communities and opportunities across the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area and the wider region. The organization brings together economic development, chamber, community development and trade functions under a single managing enterprise, with the goal of making the region the top economic growth area in the country, according to the announcement. The city of Cedar Rapids has recently increased its financial investment in the Economic Alliance, a move the organization says reflects a commitment to the competitiveness and growth of Iowa’s second-largest city. Officials said the additional funding will support efforts to attract, retain and expand businesses; develop workforce and talent strategies; strengthen key districts and quality-of-place initiatives; and connect local businesses to global markets. “Cedar Rapids’ increased investment is an important vote of confidence in the work required to compete for businesses, talent and investment,” said Juliet Abdel, president and CEO of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. “Cedar Rapids is vital to the strength of our regional economy, and its success is deeply connected to the success of communities, employers and residents throughout the broader region, including Linn, Benton, Jones, Iowa, Johnson, Cedar and Washington counties.” While the Economic Alliance serves as a strategic partner to Cedar Rapids, the organization says its work is regional in scope. It also receives investment from other communities and partners, including Linn and Iowa counties, Ely, Marion, Hiawatha, Mount Vernon, Fairfax and others. “Regional economic growth is not a zero-sum proposition,” said James Klein, chair of the Economic Alliance Board of Directors. “Our role is to connect those opportunities and help the region compete together.” According to the Economic Alliance, the city’s funding will help local small businesses reach customers outside the region, help attract and retain corporate headquarters, promote the region to companies considering where to invest and expand, and support advocacy connecting business needs with economic development and community leadership. “The City’s investment is not simply about supporting chamber programming; it is an investment in the business environment,” Ms. Abdel said. “Our businesses need advocacy, connections and resources that help them grow. That is a legitimate economic development function, and it is why the City’s investment matters.” She added, “We are strengthening an organization that already brings economic development, chamber, community development and trade resources together to create greater impact across the region.” The Economic Alliance said it will continue working with Cedar Rapids, regional communities, public-sector partners, businesses and other stakeholders on business growth, workforce development, entrepreneurship, trade and community development. “Together, we are building the conditions for long-term, inclusive and regionwide growth,” the organization said.
