ADVERTISEMENT Stanley Cup Playoffs 2026 ESPN Readies REMI/REMCO Blend, Expanded Camera Arsenal, HDR Finish for Stanley Cup Run By: Brandon Costa, Director of Digital • Posted on: April 17, 2026 • 6 minute read ADVERTISEMENT The broadcaster’s coverage starts in earnest with a tripleheader of games on Saturday and plans to go to HDR in Conference and Cup Finals As the puck drops on the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs this weekend, ESPN begins its fifth postseason covering the NHL, with a production playbook that continues to evolve: blending REMI and REMCO workflows, scaling camera complements as series intensify, and setting the stage for a full HDR presentation when the stakes are highest. Coverage begins Saturday with a tripleheader: the Ottawa Senators and the Carolina Hurricanes (3 p.m. ET), a clash of titans between the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars (5:30 p.m.), and an all-Pennsylvania matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins (8 p.m.). With eight first-round series spread across as many as 16 venues, ESPN’s Remote Operations team is tasked with building a flexible infrastructure that can adapt in real time — often without knowing final matchups until the closing days of the regular season. ESPN’s Stanley Cup coverage will be handled from Game Creek Video’s fleet of production trucks. “We’re lucky to have worked on the NHL for five years now and learn more each season, including interesting ways to execute our coverage,” says Lead Game Producer Jeff Dufine. “Having produced the Stanley Cup Final twice, we continue to push the envelope in a variety of ways, including new cameras/angles both inside and outside the arena, producing high-end telestration replays, edits, and packages to explain to the viewer how a play developed, as well as an intense creative virtual-graphics plan to highlight the biggest stars and storylines of the matchup.” Typical first-round compounds rely exclusively on Game Creek Video mobile units and range from single A units to A+B configurations, generally powered by venue electricity with fiber as the primary transmission path and IP as backup. For larger broadcasts — including ABC presentations and potential Game 7 scenarios — ESPN expands that footprint with dedicated generators and satellite redundancy. “We have to plan for any eventual scenario,” says Paul Horrell, manager, remote operations, ESPN , noting that Game Creek Video is exclusive mobile-unit provider throughout the postseason. The added wrinkle in Round 1: shared compounds. Because ESPN often operates alongside regional and international rightsholders early in the playoffs, collaboration becomes critical. That includes coordinating space, sharing camera positions, and managing signal workflows across multiple broadcasters — a logistical challenge that doesn’t exist during the regular season. Tiered Camera Strategy Built for the Moment From a production standpoint, ESPN approaches the playoffs with an eye toward scaling up. Early rounds begin with a baseline camera complement, and the footprint grows significantly as matchups deepen and storylines sharpen. At the outset, typical deployments comprise five hard cameras (including two super-slo-mo units), multiple robotic systems (Speed Shot and Rocker cams), four handhelds, and six POV cameras positioned throughout the rink. As series progress, additional elements are layered in: super-slo-mo netcams, RF skate cams, enhanced replay capabilities. By the later rounds, in a deliberate ramp-up strategy designed to match the growing intensity of the postseason, the setup expands dramatically, with ESPN deploying more than 14 super-slo-mo cameras, two shallow–depth-of-field systems, ten robotic cameras, in-arena SkyCam systems and exterior drones, and fully integrated virtual graphics and onsite studio coverage. “We continue to push the envelope,” says Dufine, “including new cameras and angles both inside and outside the arena, high-end telestration replays, and an intense creative virtual-graphics plan to highlight the biggest stars and storylines.” According to director Joe Iuliano , the goal is to “immerse the viewer in the pulse of the playoffs: the energy in the building, the emotion on the bench, and the drama of every moment.” REMI vs. REMCO + Growing to HDR With many modern large-scale sports productions, ESPN relies on a hybrid of REMI (remote integration) and REMCO (remote-controlled) workflows. Early rounds of the NHL Playoffs feature a mix of both, determined by a combination of logistical realities: production-team availability, control-room scheduling at ESPN’s Bristol, CT, headquarters, transmission capacity on any given night. As the playoffs progress — particularly when a series reaches a Game 6 and/or 7 — ESPN deploys more REMCO models, bringing additional resources onsite to support the heightened stakes and storytelling demands. ESPN crews will cover as many as eight series across the continent after working a regular season comprising more than 100 exclusive broadcasts. For the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Final, ESPN will present coverage entirely in HDR, a continuation of the broadcaster’s broader push into the format across marquee properties. The move builds on prior HDR deployments during ABC’s NHL coverage and marquee outdoor events, positioning the broadcaster to deliver its most visually dynamic hockey presentation when the audience is largest. Deep Bench Behind the Broadcast At the core of ESPN’s coverage is a veteran production team that has steadily refined its approach over the five-year NHL run. Leading the top broadcast unit are Dufine and Iuliano, supported by Associate Director Leah Anderson and a production group comprising Associate Producers Connor Joyce (ISO/tape), Jonathan Banks (graphics), Steve Peters (telestration/packages), and Booth and Stats Producer Ivan Sokalsky . On the technical side, Technical Director Craig Short works alongside A1 Dan Bernstein , comms lead Eric Williams , and V1 Rockford Todd . The seasoned crew of camera operators Doug Wilson , Mike Moody , Jason Raney , Mike Bird , Paul Steinitz , John Senese , Steven Webster , and Geoff Gordon capture the action from ice to rafters. Replay and content workflows are powered by an experienced EVS team: Ryan Gemmel , George Demko III , Greg Janik , and Brian Mulvihill . Supporting the entire operation is an extensive Remote Operations group led by Senior Specialist Brock Wetherbee , Specialists Jon Winders and Jake Mankin , and a deep roster of operations producers: Phil Erwin , Katy Abbott , Dave Walker , Carson Kenney , Andrew Schneider , Seth Shore , Rhyce Woodhill , Diana Macleod , Tracy Howe , Heidi Walker , Gordon Reed , Zacque Myers , Colleen Cannon , Shawn Taylor , Gary Weiss , and Lisa Hartley . Vendor Ecosystem Built for Scale The effort also requires a robust ecosystem of technology partners. Game Creek Video anchors the mobile-unit strategy, while Fletcher, CP Communications, and Bexel support specialty camera systems and audio workflows. Aerial coverage is powered by SkyCam and Defy systems; LombaTech handles the critical logistics of transporting key equipment from city to city. CMSI plays a central role in content management, moving recorded material between the field, ESPN’s Bristol facilities, and the NHL — including the complex task of handling HDR and SDR workflows across multiple distribution paths.
