After the killing, he allegedly attempted to commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills. Garry Miles was arrested Friday in connection with the second-degree murder of his girlfriend Faun Reese, with whom he had been in a years-long estranged relationship. He was also arrested on charges of illegal use of a weapon and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. In the warrant for his arrest, police said that Miles had another report filed against him in 2023 that resulted in no charges. “Upon conducting a records check, a previous report from 2023 was located in which Faun reported Miles pulled a kitchen knife on her and threatened to ‘end it right now.’ No arrest was made on that investigation,” the warrant said. Reese’s father initially contacted police after he had not heard from her in several days, which was extremely out of the ordinary, the warrant said. Police went to the apartment where Miles and Reese lived at 8280 Cypress Ave. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and found both of them lying on the bed incapacitated. Coroner investigators pronounced Reese dead at the scene, and determined the cause of death was multiple injuries consistent with stab wounds from a bloodied kitchen knife that was on the bedside table. Miles, who was lying beside Reese, had overdosed on trazodone and eszopiclone, common prescription sleep aids. Police observed dried vomit on the floor next to him and scratch marks on his neck consistent with defensive scratch marks, police said. Miles also had numerous small cuts on his wrist consistent with self-harm. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake for serious injuries from an overdose. Following his discharge from the hospital on Friday, he was taken into custody by police. During the initial investigation, police learned that Reese and Miles had a tumultuous relationship. Reese disclosed to a family member that Miles had verbally threatened to kill her, her family and himself on multiple occasions, according to the arrest warrant. Police said Reese’s aunt said she last spoke with her on the afternoon of Aug. 23 and when she tried to call back that night, Miles answered the phone and said Reese was at a funeral and couldn’t talk. Reese’s father said that was highly unusual because Reese never let Miles answer her phone. On Tuesday, August 25, Reese’s father drove to the apartment, saw her car in the driveway and after he couldn’t reach her, called 911, police said. Upon arrival, police said that there were no signs of forced entry and that no one else had a key to the apartment. Reese’s autopsy on Aug. 26 confirmed that her cause of death was a stab wound in the neck that struck multiple blood vessels, causing her to bleed out. Miles has no other prior arrests in Baton Rouge but was arrested multiple times in California for violating a court order to prevent domestic violence. It is not confirmed that Reese was the subject of this court order. ${messages.random()} Story Continued Below News Tips: newstips@theadvocate.com Other questions: subscriberservices@theadvocate.com Need help?
