The group is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, the former director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers. BBC Sport reported on Monday that negotiations with Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have progressed, while other reports suggest an agreement could be announced in the coming days. The proposed investment would value Liverpool at approximately $5.9 billion, with the 30% stake priced around $1.8 billion. The parties are understood to have reached an agreement in principle, though the transaction has not yet been formally completed. “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” an FSG spokesperson said. FSG has not indicated that it intends to surrender control of Liverpool. The proposed transaction is for a minority holding, meaning the Boston-based group would remain the club’s controlling shareholder. Bhatia has extensive experience in English football following an 18-year association with QPR. He is also the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and relinquished his stake in QPR last month while negotiations over Liverpool progressed. Bezos brings considerably greater financial weight to the consortium. The Amazon founder has a real-time net worth of approximately $284 billion, according to Forbes, placing him among the world’s three richest people. He stepped down as Amazon chief executive in 2021 but remains the company’s founder and executive chairman. The 62-year-old has previously explored opportunities to enter major professional sport. He was linked with potential purchases of the NFL’s Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks but ultimately did not proceed with either acquisition. A Liverpool investment would represent his first equity position in a major European football club. Saverin, who co-founded Facebook before becoming an international investor, is another member of the consortium. FSG purchased Liverpool for $300 million in 2010 and has overseen a dramatic increase in the club’s commercial value. During its ownership, Liverpool have won the Champions League and two Premier League titles, while Anfield has undergone major redevelopment and a new training complex has been built. FSG has previously brought external investors into Liverpool. In September 2023, Dynasty Equity acquired a small minority stake, with Liverpool saying the funds would primarily be used to reduce debt and cover capital expenditure connected to Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and other investments.
