Newcastle United to make emotional goodbye to goalkeeper as James Trafford deal could be revived A goalkeeping reshuffle could be on the cards at St James' Park ahead of the summer transfer window Comments Lee Ryder Chief Newcastle United Writer 11:55, 22 Apr 2026 View 2 Images Manchester City and England goalkeeper James Trafford (left) with Newcastle's Tino Livramento (Image: The FA via Getty Images) Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is understood to be interested in resurrecting a move to Newcastle United this summer. The Magpies thought they'd clinched a £27m deal for the ex-Burnley man, before Man City pounced at the 11th hour and beat them to the punch due to a buyback clause. Trafford signed for City just before Pep Guardiola moved for Gianluigi Donnarumma, a decision that took Trafford by surprise. But a summer exit could be on the cards for the England international and Newcastle will be keen to discuss renewed terms. Already, with the window still two months away from opening, reports in the North West have indicated it could take £40m to lure Trafford from the Etihad Stadium. With City interested in two Newcastle players it remains to be seen whether he could be used in a cash plus player deal if the Citizens firm up offers for Sandro Tonali or Tino Livramento. But a straight cash deal could still be done by Newcastle if Nick Pope is sold this summer or the Magpies opt againt buying Aaron Ramsdale after his expensive loan deal from Southampton. Newcastle have already coughed up a £4m loan fee for Ramsdale and have the option to buy the ex-Arsenal man. Should the Saints be promoted and United opt out of that clause to buy Ramsdale, he could battle for his place in the Premier League again on the South Coast. Either way, Newcastle are in the market for a new goalkeeper with the futures of John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie also uncertain. Both are out of contract and could leave at the end of the season. Trafford would be an upgrade for Newcastle in the goalkeeper department and the ambitious keeper's wages, around £100,000 per week, fit into the Magpies' budget. There will be competition for Trafford though with Juventus the latest club to be linked with the Cumbrian-born star. "It is what it is. It's football, it is what it is, you've got to keep grafting every day and the games that come, play as hard as you can. "It's just another experience to add to my career and yeah, it has been good learning. "I don't know what happens next season. I just know that I'll just take it a day at a time and try and improve."
