PIF give Newcastle chiefs green light for key move as new Gallowgate End plan discussed Scouring Europe for talent is on the menu behind the scenes at Newcastle and Aston Villa plans reopen Toon stadium discussion Comments Lee Ryder Chief Newcastle United Writer 13:09, 22 Apr 2026 Updated 16:03, 22 Apr 2026 View Image The Gallowgate End at St James' Park (Image: Newcastle Chronicle) Newcastle United are aiming to make a key move behind the scenes in order to improve their Academy. With Newcastle already looking to hoover up talent across Europe with key new hires for youth scouts to monitor countries such as Italy, Holland and France, the Magpies are now advertising for a an Academy Recruitment Director. In the last few days Newcastle have cranked up that search by advertising for hires in the Balkans region and Portugal, areas that have previously been overlooked. The role is expected to oversee Newcastle's bid to sign the best youngsters in Europe with United already starting to pin down top talents in South America. Last week, United announced that Ecuador youngster Johan Martinez will join the club when he turns 18 from Independiente del Valle. A new recruitment executive will ensure Newcastle join the top clubs across Europe with proper organisation behind the scenes meaning if there are top talents on show in Europe, United will be represented in the stands.. The job advert reads: "The role includes complex diary management, internal and external communications, UK and European travel and expense arrangements, document management, record keeping, meetings and event administration, and budget support." "Independiente del Valle have a strong reputation for developing young players and Johan has undoubtedly benefited from that environment." Newcastle shown the way by rival as Gallowgate End question remains unanswered With PIF chiefs set to fly into Tyneside next week the subject of rebuilding St James' Park or finding a new stadium will come back into the conversation. However, this week Premier League rivals Aston Villa have shown that a modernisation of the current set-up is possible. Next season Villa will rebuild their North Stand behind the goal close to the away end at Villa Park. It means the capacity will drop to 37,000 for one season but Villa will return for the 2027/28 campaign with a capacity of 50,000. One of Newcastle's dilemmas is paying money to increase the Gallowgate End capacity and take the stadium up to 65,000. That would take a big operation but after getting the results of a feasibility report, Newcastle know they can at least rebuild one area of the ground at Gallowgate. It is well known to the fanbase that the East Stand can't be altered because of the listed buildings behind it and both the Leazes End and Milburn Stand can't be extended any further after going up to Level 7 in 2000. The prospect of increasing the Gallowgate End at Newcastle is an ongoing discussion. CEO David Hopkinson, when asked about increasing the Gallowgate End, said on December 1: "We’re looking at a multitude of different scenarios. One of the things we are reviewing right now is that we’re going to be here, in something like the current format, for years. I think that there are some things we’ve maybe not done because we’ve been waiting for the bigger decision. "I think we’re going to think about the phasing of this next phase of our lives, and recognise that there are things we need to do now with regard to the stadium issue. Maybe we can incorporate that in a future renovation? Maybe we pick it up and move it with us to a new park? But recognising that we are going to be at St James’ Park in pretty much its current format for years to come is important. We’re thinking through what improvements should we make in that intervening period? We could make tweaks and changes to improve the here and now." St James' Park date set As reported by notebook last week, Newcastle reserves chose not to enter the Nortumberland Senior Cup this season due to commitments in European competition.
