Rengifo is facing a lengthy absence after an MRI revealed a complete ACL tear in addition to an MCL sprain. The 29-year-old infielder suffered the injury over the weekend while making a throw from the outfield. It’s unfortunate timing since he was emerging as an impactful midseason addition for San Diego. He’ll undergo surgery at some point in the near future and is facing a roughly 9-12 month recovery timeline. Robbie Ray SD Starting Pitcher #38 Robbie Ray received a no-decision in Sunday’s quality start against the Rays, allowing one earned run on three hits over six innings pitched. Ray struck out four and walked three. He was in line for the victory until Mason Miller gave up a two-run homer in the ninth. The fly ball was in Samad Taylor’s glove before it went over the wall. The lone run Ray surrendered was a solo homer from Junior Caminero. The veteran lefty was acquired from the Giants at this summer’s trade deadline, and he’s now allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five starts with the Padres. He’s scheduled to face the Yankees at home next time out. Mason Miller SD Relief Pitcher #22 Mason Miller was charged with his second blown save of the year in Sunday’s 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Rays, allowing a two-run homer off the bat of Jonny DeLuca in the ninth. The fly ball traveled into the shallow left-field corner and was in Samad Taylor’s glove before going over the wall, tying the game at three. San Diego then took a one-run lead in the 11th before Tampa Bay scored two in the bottom half to walk it off. Miller struck out two in his lone inning without walking anyone. He has a career-high 32 saves already this year, along with one of the 10 highest K-BB rates among qualified relievers since 2010. Xander Bogaerts SD Shortstop #2 Xander Bogaerts went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base as the Padres fell to the Rays 5-4 in 11 innings on Sunday. Bogaerts’ two-RBI single came on a hard-hit grounder against Drew Rasmussen in the top of the fourth. The 33-year-old also picked up his 18th steal, giving him a good chance to beat his previous career high of 20, set last season. The speed has been much needed from a fantasy perspective, as his batting average has collapsed to .217 this season. Bogaerts hasn’t hit below .260 since he was a 21-year-old in 2014. He also hasn’t batted in the upper half of San Diego’s lineup since the first series out of the All-Star break this year, a concerning development for a player signed through 2033. Sung-Mun Song SD 2nd Baseman #24 Padres recalled INF Sung-Mun Song from Triple-A El Paso. Song was just optioned out on Monday, but with Luis Rengifo (knee) landing on the injured list on Sunday, he’ll rejoin the Padres before the mandatory 10 days are through. The 30-year-old has hit just .202/.305/.263 with one homer and 12 stolen bases in 134 plate appearances with the Padres this season. Luis Rengifo SD Left Fielder #21 Padres placed INF/OF Luis Rengifo on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain. Rengifo suffered the injury on Saturday as his knee buckled while making a throw from the outfield. While no clear timeline has been given for his return, it’s possible that he’ll miss the remainder of the season. Sung-Mun Song was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move on Sunday. Samad Taylor SD Left Fielder #0 Padres activated INF/OF Samad Taylor from the 10-day injured list. The Padres get Taylor back as they lose Gavin Sheets (foot) to the injured list on Sunday. He had been shelved since early July due to a right oblique strain. The 28-year-old has done a terrific job for the Padres this season, slashing .330/.410/.398 with one homer, 11 RBI and six stolen bases in 102 plate appearances over 26 games. Gavin Sheets SD 1st Baseman #30 Padres placed 1B/OF Gavin Sheets on the 10-day injured list with a left foot sprain. Sheets suffered the injury while running the bases during Saturday’s game. No word yet on how long he’ll be sidelined for. Samad Taylor was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move to take his place on the Padres’ active roster. Luis Rengifo SD Left Fielder #21 The Padres announced that Luis Rengifo suffered a right knee sprain during Saturday’s loss to the Rays. The versatile 29-year-old will fly back to San Diego for further evaluation. Padres’ skipper Craig Stammen told reporters after the game that it “didn’t look good” so the expectation is that Rengifo will wind up on the injured list prior to Sunday’s ballgame. Ty France SD 1st Baseman #25 Ty France went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer against the Rays on Saturday. France knocked a base hit in the second inning, then later took Nick Martinez deep for a two-run blast in the sixth. The 32-year-old first baseman is having a solid season with the Padres, hitting .287/.356/.509 with 19 homers and 58 RBI across 400 plate appearances.
