One of San Diego FC’s leaders will depart the club this summer to run Canada’s national teams. SDFC technical director Kenneth Heiner-Møller has been named Canada Soccer Association’s new sporting director. He will oversee the men’s and women’s national teams, which come with a San Diego connection of their own. Canada’s women are coached by former San Diego Wave boss Casey Stoney; their goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan, spent four seasons in goal for the Wave. Hired in November 2024, before the first SDFC roster was fully constructed, Heiner-Møller helped install the Major League Soccer expansion club’s attack while also working with the club’s nascent academy. SDFC sporting director Tyler Heaps praised Heiner-Møller, saying he “made a meaningful impact on our club in a relatively short period of time.” “His experience, leadership, and clarity have helped lay important groundwork for who we want to be as a football club,” Heaps said. A native of Denmark, Heiner-Møller spent two seasons (2018-20) coaching Canada’s women’s national team after coach John Herdman left the women’s team to coach the men. Heiner-Møller has also spent time as the coach of Denmark’s women’s national team and technical director for the nation’s men’s team. Heiner-Møller’s return to Canada comes just as North America is preparing to host this summer’s World Cup. MLS will take a seven-week midseason break as the United States, Canada and Mexico welcome teams from all over the globe. “When I come on board in the next few months, I look forward to setting a clear sporting direction with strong colleagues and working closely with clubs, leagues, provinces, and territories to support continued alignment and growth across the games,” he said.
