Sport Ministry to conduct capacity-building sports seminar in partnership with Deakin University and Global Super League - Guyana Chronicle

Guyana’s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, alongside the National Sports Commission (NSC), has joined forces with Australia’s Deakin University and the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) to host a two-day sports seminar aimed at elevating the country’s sports management ecosystem. Scheduled for July 30-31, 2026, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in Georgetown, the seminar features an intensive curriculum delivered by facilitators from Deakin University’s Department of Sports Management—home to the world’s second-ranked Sports Management Master’s programme. The initiative aims to equip local sports federations, administrators, industry professionals, and students with practical tools in governance, workforce development, and event management. The opening ceremony on Day 1 sets the stage for a comprehensive programme. Following opening remarks from Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, GSL Director Jamie Stewart, Minister within the Ministry Steven Jacobs, and Subject Minister Hon. Charles Ramson Jr., Deakin University Professor Campbell Jamieson will outline the workshop’s core objectives. “One of our core objectives at the Ministry is building capacity across the sports sector by connecting governance, workforce development, and event leveraging into an integrated understanding of sports administration,” Minister Ramson noted ahead of the launch. “Sports development today is far bigger than just athlete performance, and to achieve the national objective of a premier destination for world-class events, it requires big-picture thinking at all levels.” Echoing those sentiments, Minister Jacobs stressed that structural growth must parallel talent discovery. “This initiative forms part of the construction of a stronger sports ecosystem in Guyana, one that facilitates talent development for athletes and administrators alike. Sport must be seen not only as competition, but as a pathway for discipline, opportunity, national pride, and long-term development.” The academic framework will be led by Professor Pamm Phillips, an internationally recognised sports management scholar with over 25 years of global experience across Australia, the United States, and Asia. Designed as a progressive, integrated exploration of sports development, the agenda steers clear of isolated concepts, guiding attendees through four core thematic pillars: Building an Ecosystem for Sport Participation and Development: Moving from grassroots engagement through to elite performance pipelines. Governance: Frameworks and structural considerations for sustainable organisational leadership. The Sport Workforce: Cultivating human capital, volunteers, and administrative personnel across regional networks. Sport Tourism and Leveraging Events: Capitalising on major international fixtures to drive broader socio-economic impact. The initiative comes backed by the Global Super League, whose Chairman, West Indies legendary captain Sir Clive Lloyd, highlighted the importance of empowering local administrators. “GSL is a proudly Guyanese event that seeks to engage the world and celebrate our wonderful country,” Lloyd said. “The latest GSL campaign celebrates the ‘Super We’—our greatest strength, which is our people. This workshop, I hope, provides our sporting people some tools for expansion and excellence.” Day 1 kicks off at 09:00hrs with the ceremonial opening and executive addresses, before transitioning directly into Session 1 (Building an Ecosystem for Sport Participation) and Session 2 (Governance). Following afternoon deliberations on workforce strategies, the day concludes with interactive discussions applying international case studies directly to the Guyanese context. Day 2 shifts toward practical output, featuring dedicated sessions on event leveraging and sports tourism, culminating in a strategy session designed to map out Guyana’s long-term sporting blueprint.
