Featured reviews xmfbpy9 Open your mind and watch Shocked by some of the dismissive comments from certain people including some critics. The quality of acting in this is outstanding with some very credible borderline chaotic ensemble work very skilfully shot. The person who said the characters Steve (head teacher) and Shy (seventeen year old) are two versions of the same pain made a great point. Tracy Ullman's part is not huge but she makes every second compelling. Cillian Murphy - this is the best performance I've seen from him. He digs deep and it's totally believable. Some of the artifices of the plot are not perfect but really the whole thing lives or dies on the emotional investment it asks of the viewer. If you are standoffish with it you won't get it. Open your heart to the script, the actors, the cinematography and the music and you'll be overwhelmed. CinemaSerf7 Steve Though Cillian Murphy takes top billing and turns in a visceral effort in the title role, this is really a formidable ensemble effort as he leads a small group to teachers in what seems to be a constant rearguard action with some of the most unruly teenagers you'll ever see. Helped out by his deputy "Amanda" (Tracey Ullman) and self-medicating regularly, he has the added pressure of a local BBC television crew coming to do a piece on the place; the local MP is also coming to get in on that action and the local council are also along this day to tell them all that the school's future - at around £30k p.a. Per pupil, is making the whole enterprise increasingly unfeasible. Our first glimpse of the residents sees us meet "Shy" (Jay Lycurgo) who is dancing about in a field slowly getting "baked" at 10am! Then there's "Jamie" (Luke Ayres). Larger than life in every sense and sharp enough to wind up just about everyone else; "Riley" (Joshua J. Parker) is akin to the Duracell Bunny only at ten times the speed. "Shola" (Little Simz) is the newbie teacher and Emily Watson's "Jenny" tries to fathom out the psychology of their erratic behaviour. They are all foul-mouthed, violent and obnoxious, sure - but they are all also bright; they fight and brawl but there is loyalty amongst them, affection even. Each character gets their moment under the spotlight, but essentially we focus on "Steve" - a man who has demons of his own and on "Shy" whose behaviour has left his mum and stepfather to cut all ties with the lad. You get the sense that both men are in a very similar boat, only one of them wears a tie and the other some orange-foam headphones - and both deliver emotionally-charged performances. Ullman is strong and sympathetic in support to just about everyone and there is a unifying cameo from Roger Allam who plays the typically pompous and condescending MP "Montague-Powell" (pronounced "Pole") who, like all but those who actually lived in this rapidly dilapidating stately pile, had little idea of just what went on here, and of just how crucial this infrastructure was in offering a semblance of hope, security and consistency to young men who's lucidity ebbed and flowed as readily as the tides we see so often on the poster on the wall. The last few minutes remind us, powerfully, that these staff are professional people who must try to balance the demands of their careers with those of their personal lives, and the clever use of a tape recorder to serve as an aide-memoir to "Steve" has a double benefit of also helping the audience to appreciate just how stressful all of their lives were. No matter just how futile their efforts frequently appeared to be, these were not people inclined to give up - regardless of the sacrifices they would routinely and repeatedly have to make. The kids? Well the acting on display here is natural, entertaining, chilling and acrobatic all whilst offering us a sense of their vulnerability, their loneliness and their inter-dependence - for all their bravado and practical jokes. It's a breakneck piece of cinema that serves to make us realise that there can be no price put on their vocational skills nor on the provision of "care" for these people whom society at large would doubtless consider a threat and who would almost certainly incarcerate them. It's a very tricky subject to get across with integrity, but I think this does make you sit up and think - and laugh occasionally, too. muzotimeUZBEK6 Chaotic Compassion Clash I went in expecting something like Small Things Like These, but Steve hits way harder and messier. It's a 24-hour spiral through a reform school headmaster's breakdown, and man, it's a lot. Cillian Murphy's performance is magnetic - he's exhausted, kind, and unraveling all at once. But the film itself? Kind of a sensory overload. The camera never sits still, the script throws too many characters at you, and the emotional beats feel rushed. I wanted more time with Shy, the kid at the heart of it all, but the movie keeps yanking focus back to Steve. It's like the story forgot who it was really about. Still, there's something raw and honest in how it shows the burnout of caring too much. It's not inspirational, not tidy, but it's bold. Not for everyone, though. If you like quiet drama, this'll feel like a punch in the face. But if you're into chaotic empathy and don't mind a bit of narrative mess, it's worth the ride. Just don't expect closure. lilianaoana7 On how maybe being selfish would help The amount of love and dedication and selflessness required to want to and care for these troubled kids is unfathomable to me. And troubled is an understatement for what they are. Probably most ordinary people would run for the hills after a day in this madhouse of a place. School for juveniles and maladjusted students, only it's anything but a juvenile school and during this day shown in the movie it really looks like the students quite often take over the school. It broke my heart towards the end though and even if Shy saved himself I'm not so sure about Steve with that (not so) ambiguous ending. The acting is beautiful but I found it quite chaotic, much like the students and this is possibly by design, but I also could not become that invested cause I was feeling appalled every other scene by what is shown and honestly I could not cope with these people or see any reason to even bother so I guess I'm not that empathetic or I'm just self-preserving, which clearly these teachers are not. And they should, otherwise they end up like that. Maybe not everybody has a place in society, as cruel as that sounds. ferguson-67 How was your day? Greetings again from the darkness. You know those days when it feels like you are being pulled in all directions, and nothing seems to go right? Welcome to 24 hours in the life of Steve, the headteacher at Stanton Wood, a reform boarding college for troubled/challenging young men. This is one of those days that feels like a week. Even before he walks through the front door, he's already getting pulled this way and that - a minute here, a quick decision there, a request for a sidebar, a need to run something by him. It's a relentless job, heightened by the presence of a BBC documentary crew. Writer Max Porter adapted his 2023 novel "Shy" for the big screen, and the film reunites director Tim Mielants with Cillian Murphy (Oscar winner for OPPENHEIMER, 2023), his leading man from SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE (2024) and "Peaky Blinders". Murphy is one of the few actors who is somehow just as effective when he's not talking as when he is. It's a skill that benefits this film which is ... choose your preferred descriptive word ... frenetic, chaotic, hectic. These students are certainly energetic and that energy often slips into a combative mode. The faculty spends an inordinate amount of time diffusing these conflicts. We only see bits and pieces of academic teaching, leaving the bulk of time devoted to life lessons and behavioral advice. Emily Watson plays the school psychiatrist/therapist, Jenny, and as with all the adults working at Stanton Wood, her heart is in the right place - regardless of the immense frustration that goes with the job. Tracey Ullman, flashing some dramatic chops, is Steve's most supportive co-worker - and quickly expresses her displeasure at his tendency to self-medicate. Lola (Little Simz) is the newest faculty member, and she has one particularly tense scene in the cafeteria ... proving her mettle in this environment. The source novel is entitled "Shy", and although Steve is the focus of the film, the student named Shy (Jay Lycurgo, "Titans") seems to be a special case for Steve, and Shy's phone conversation with his mother is the most heartbreaking moment in the film. When it is announced that the school is too expensive to run and will be shut down in six months, the presence of a local official (Roger Allam) leaves little doubt that a political message is being delivered. A recurring element finds the documentary crew asking each participant to name three words that describe themselves. Steve's response: "very, very, tired". He looks it and we understand. Some nice camera work from cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert gives us glimpses of a lovely world outside the walls of Stanton Wood, whereas inside the stress is palpable.
