Sunderland expect transfer battle for £8m star with Premier League new boys in running EXCLUSIVE: Sunderland are ready for several bids for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson after a successful loan spell at Millwall Comments Michael Plant Liverpool FC Reporter 11:55, 24 Apr 2026 View Image Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has impressed on loan for Millwall (Image: NurPhoto via Getty Images) Sunderland are braced for wholesale interest in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who is expected to leave the club this summer. ‌ The 25-year-old played a vital role in the Black Cats’ promotion charge last season, playing 45 times and all three play-off games. But the summer acquisition of Robin Roefs pushed Patterson further down the pecking order. ‌ After being selected on the bench for all of the first 23 league matches this season, he joined Millwall in January and could be in line for successive promotions to the Premier League. ‌ Patterson has impressed, keeping five clean sheets in his 12 appearances for the club, and it’s understood the Lions are keen on making the move permanent ahead of next season, although there are no concrete transfer plans at this stage. Millwall are likely to face competition, with the likes of Hull City and West Bromwich Albion also interested in the Sunderland shot-stopper. JOIN US ON FACEBOOK! Follow the Chronicle’s Sunderland AFC page for more news and analysis ‌ Coventry City are monitoring Patterson’s situation after gaining promotion to the Premier League, with uncertainty over the future of on-loan keeper Carl Rushworth Derby County may consider a move if Jacob Widell Zetterstrom departs, while Burnley could also be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following confirmation of their relegation to the Championship, and have previously expressed interest in Patterson. As have Southampton, who even looked into a loan move in January. Unsurprisingly, at this stage, there are no talks ongoing, but Sunderland are expecting the academy graduate to depart this summer. The club’s £8million asking price may be a sticking point for interested parties, especially those in the Championship. ‌ Patterson has played 169 times for Sunderland, holding down the No 1 jersey for three and a half years prior to this season, and helping the side earn two promotions. Sources have indicated he is ready to take the next step in his career and wants to play regular first-team football. Melker Ellborg’s January arrival from Malmo means Patterson is seen as third-choice at Sunderland, hence the club’s willingness to cash in on the player. ‌ However, those funds are likely to be reinvested back into the goalkeeping unit, with the need for quality depth in that area seen as a vital element of the squad’s long-term planning. For now, Patterson is focused on Millwall’s promotion push and is known to have enjoyed his short stint in the capital. What comes next is unclear, but Patterson’s 13-year affinity with Sunderland looks set to end this summer.
