Premier of Victoria, Hon. Ben Carroll, announced the funding during a 1956 Melbourne Olympics 70th Anniversary commemoration event. The funding allocation is split evenly through a $750,000 grant to Paralympics Australia and an equivalent $750,000 grant to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) via their respective Team Appeals. Victoria becomes the second state government to commit direct state funding to the LA28 campaign, following an earlier financial contribution from the South Australian Government. The funding commitment arrives amid rising operational expenses associated with managing international logistics, specialized equipment transport, and medical support teams for North American major games hosting cycles. Paralympics Australia emphasized that the cost of delivering the national team to LA28 will significantly exceed the budget required for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The state funding will directly offset qualification logistics, travel costs, specialized Para-sport equipment, and high-performance coaching and medical staff leading up to and during the 2028 Games. Premier of Victoria Ben Carroll highlighted the state’s focus on supporting Victorian athletes across elite pathway environments. “Victoria’s athletes are amongst the best in the world – we’re backing them in with a $1.5 million commitment so they can represent Victoria on the world stage,” Carroll said. Noting the material impact of state-level financial support in maintaining competitive equitable access for Para-athletes, CEO of Paralympics Australia, Cameron Murray, shared: “Right across Victoria and across the nation, athletes are working extremely hard day-in and day-out with the goal of becoming part of the Australian Paralympic Team for LA28.” “On behalf of Paralympics Australia, thank you to Premier Carroll and the Victorian Government for your genuine support and this generous boost towards our LA28 campaign,” Murray said. Murray added that the escalating financial requirements involved in international sports delivery. “The cost of sending the Australian Paralympic Team to LA will be significantly higher than it was for Paris 2024.” “Delivering an Australian Team of athletes with disability along with coaches, team managers, carers, medical experts and Paralympics Australia’s outstanding operational staff is an enormous undertaking and there are, of course, substantial expenses involved. “This commitment by the Victorian Government to invest in the 2028 Australian Paralympic Team will make a genuine material difference to our efforts and is also a strong endorsement of the ideals of the Australian Paralympic Movement, which maintains that all Australians deserve the right to pursue sport as far as their determination and skill will take them,” Murray added. Paralympics Australia continues to rely on a mixed funding model encompassing federal grants, state government contributions, corporate sponsorships, and philanthropic donations. Alongside elite campaign delivery, the organisation maintains ongoing initiatives targeting athlete talent identification, grass-roots system entry, and post-sport career transition frameworks for Para-athletes.
